RICH MEN BEHAVING BADLY + Russell

New Target: Rich White Men Behaving Badly

One thing I can say about corporate America, this entity is the epitome of what America should be or we want it to be.  Large corporations hold up the legislative rules in our society.  Corporate America says you should NOT do the following:

  1. No matter what, you cannot say the N-word. And, you can’t hold plantation style weddings with Black slaves.
  2. You can’t ”ruthie” a girl and take advantage of her sexually. It’s against the law.
  3. You can’t divorce your wife and marry your 18 year old step-daughter. But, you will still be able to make movies, depending if you are Woody Allen.
  4. Do not take sexual advantage of a fellow employee with threats of career retribution.

Rich white men, you can’t be a pig about your wants and desires just because you know how to bully a deal,  by the way that’s why you are famous and rich, or just plain powerful and rich.  I can’t believe the white men who have tumbled.  Even my own white man, Matt Lauer. $25 million dollar man.  Dang I suspected Matt when it was rumored about a love child with a co-host.  Where there is smoke there’s fire.  Or, what is done in the dark will come to light.  More motherly sayings.

This all started with Billy Bush and the conversation he had with the presidential candidate, Donald Trump.   I love the statement …. Grab ‘em by the pussy.  Sexual harassment has become a national reckoning effecting rich white men in various sectors of our society.  Here are a few who have fallen.

Billy Bush – Access Hollywood with Donald Trump

Harvey Weinstein – movie mogul

Charlie Rose – host PBS and CBS

Bill O’Reilly – FOX talk-show host

Glen Thrust – prominent political journalists

Russell Simmons – Hip-Hop Mogul

Senator Al Franken – Ex- Entertainer

James Levine –  music director for Boston Symphony

And there is more ….

The daily question is who is next?

Princess Meghan

Well, Prince Harry has chosen a Princess from America.  And, as it goes in America, she is being touted as being biracial in the media.   What are we talking about her Spanish father and white mother?  You tell me.

Did you figure it out?  So no one is calling her “Black?”

Just saying!

Racism Alive, Well, Thriving

Racism is alive, well, and living in America.  You can find it in all aspects of Black living.  From the chain grocery stores that operate a little different, the cigarette bill boards and liquor bill boards in Black neighborhoods. Encouraging unhealthy habits, even when you feel you have achieved a better quality of life than your parents there are those moments when you have to remind yourself racism been there all along hiding in the hearts of some white folks.  The work place is another place Blacks encounter racism.

I worked in the IT department and manned help desk calls.  One time, I got a call from a user who was at the executive level , he locked himself out of his computer.  So, he gave me his passwords to his computer and email.  After using the password s ,I fixed his problems and h was the typical  grateful user. But, I felt uneasy and had to go wash my hands.  The hand washing was more than let’s be germ free.  I felt some kind a way about those passwords.  Even in retirement, I wonder what kind of man I worked with when I thought I knew him.

Bigger question why do I still have these passwords?

DNA Diaries

In June 2016, I was in the final planning stages for our bi-annual family reunion under my leadership and in my town.  While working in Family Tree Maker software, I noticed an email icon indicating I have a message.  I didn’t use the software for email.  At first sight the email was in a strange place. This was not just any email but an email that would change who I think I am.  I won’t use real names so those who prefer to remain anonymous can do so.  You see I was putting the finishing touches on the Brown Family Tree for the reunion that was in a matter of weeks.   Suddenly, I see an envelope email icon out of the corner of my eye so I clicked and now I am no longer in Family Tree Maker software but in AncestryDNA. I read the email:

Hello Kitty-

Apparently, we are somehow matched/related genetically. You popped up 1st on List of Related 1st-2nd Cousins – Confidence Extremely High.

Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

Thank you in advance,
Chloe

I looked at my DNA matches and she is listed under first cousin. I’m flabbergasted!  All my first cousins are like siblings except my Uncle James’ daughter Annie.  Family story goes we had a first cousin in Florida, Uncle James’ daughter.  His wife killed him and went to prison and all contact was severed but there his 3 year old little girl somewhere in Florida.  Fortunately, the release of more public documents over the years made it possible for me to find her. My aunt talks to Annie and keeps up with her now.  I became a member of AncestryDNA in 2014 and only had 4th cousins.

Now, I have a first cousin and I don’t know how I am related to her but after the reunion it will be my one mission to discover what this means to me.  How is Chloe my 1st cousin?  That would mean our parents are siblings but I know it’s not possible on my mother’s side.  Now, my dad was another matter.   I didn’t have a relationship with him but my mother told me about him when I would ask.  I reached out to him at 25 years old with a negative response so that ended that. My father had 8 sisters and 1 brother.   I’m close with my dad’s sister, Lucille who still lives in the family home.  Unfortunately my dad is dead as well as my mother.  Who is this new first cousin?

So begins my journey searching for answers and ancestors with matching DNA!

Filmmaker Anthony Marshall introduces us to Brooklyn real estate agent and family man Anthony Morris. Marshall highlights the life of a black professional juggling family life and personal aspiration within a demanding industry. Anthony shares the story of a background that was less than ideal but he does not dwell on that. Through a demanding work schedule and family life he seems only focused and determined to attain a personal goal he set for himself. How does a young man in America develop an internal compass which can help drive such determination and focus?

Sundown Towns

What are Sundown Towns?

Sundown Towns are towns that Black folks should not be in at sundown.  Through, whatever means necessary, Black folks are persuaded by local ordinances, intimidation or violence not to live in these towns as be out of town by sundown. It’s an all-white municipality that wants to stay that way. So, Blacks are not welcomed.

What are the names of some Sundown Towns?
millvale

Millvale, Pa.  – a suburb of Pittsburgh is known as a Sundown Town. According to Phillip Jenkin’s book, “Hoods and Shirts”, Millvale was the center of a Nazi movement in the 1930s. A local historian remembers that the principal in the local movement was one Edwin “Ed” Flaig. His “Hunter’s Lodge” in Millvale is discussed in a book on American Nazis titled “Under Cover: My Four Years in the Nazi Underworld of America” by John Carlson (1943). For many years, even up to 1996, blacks (and other minorities) were not welcome on the “Hunter’s Lodge” property.

Chippewa, OH – Chippewa Township / Doylestown – Historically, Blacks were brought in from Viriginia to Doylestown to work in the mines because of a mining strike. The white miners were hostile to the Black miners.  Doylestown’s census after 1900 shows they disappeared after the strikeThere have also been some interesting leads in Doylestown with African American strike workers brought from VA and kept in a stockade. They disappeared from Doylestown after the 1900 census. Many moved to the next town over, while others returned home to VA.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin – This town was known to have signs that stated, “NIGGER: Don’t let the sun go down on you in our town!”  Today the town is 93% white.

Cut and Shoot, TX – A black attorney who lives in Texas reports having seen a sundown sign in Cut and Shoot. TX Resident. “I have seen a KKK recruiting booth on the side of the road at the entrance of Cut and Shoot coming from US 59 in the mid 1990.”

Passadena. Tx– Pasadena, TX had a sign that warned blacks, but used a much more derogatory term, to be out when the sun went down. Ironically, if this is true, Pasadena’s population today is probably 50%, or more, minority.”
A Washington Post reported interviewed a black man who had moved to Pasadena a “neighbor came over and asked, ‘When are you moving out?’ The man, bemused, replied, ‘We just moved in.’ The neighbor replied, ‘I didn’t ask when you moved in, I asked when are you moving out?'” At least one dead cat was thrown on the families lawn. They lasted six months.

Old Homossa, FL– “According to the legend I was taught by inhabitants of Homosassa, just a few short years before I moved there in 1990 there was a sign that had been repeatedly posted and torn down on the only road that leads to Old Homosassa. The sign reportedly stated, ‘Nigger, don’t let the sun set on your ass in Old Homosassa!’ “Also reported by people who had moved there a short time before I arrived, a civil war had raged between residents of Old Homosassa and the local newspaper. Apparently, a young black man had been hired to mow the lawn of one of the town banks just outside of Old Homosassa and in ‘Homosassa Proper.’ Some rednecks in a pick up truck drove by the bank and fired a few shots off at the terrified worker, all the while shouting racial slurs at him. The incident was reported in the local rag, which prompted commentary from readers. As most normal people would be, they were outraged that such an incident would take place in their fair county, and felt that the offenders should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. [Other Old Homosassa residents] rose to defend their citizens’ actions… they flooded the newspaper’s central office with arguments in defense and even support of the incident.” -former Old Homosassa school teacher

levittown

Levittown, NYWilliam Levitt, a real estate developer created the suburban housing development known as Levittown, NY.  From Lizabeth Cohen, A Consumers’ Republic (NY: Knopf, 2003): “In 1953, when Levittown, LI’s population reached 70,000, it was the largest community in America with no black population.” (p. 217) Only 57 blacks by 1960. By 1980, 45 blacks. From Martha Biondi, To Stand and Fight (Cambridge: Harvard U P, 2003): Levittown (on LI) contained a clause in the lease for rental properties: “The tenant agrees not to permit the premises to be used or occupied by any person other than members of the Caucasian race.” (p. 230) The Committee to End Discrimination in Levittown, including some residents, polled and claimed 61% of residents favored admitting blacks. “William Levitt refused to renew the leases of two families, one who had violated the racial policy by hosting an interracial play group, and the other for simply being sympathetic neighbors.”
